Medicine is All About SEX!
As you guys know, there are heaps of stuff to remember in Medicine. All the nerves, their functions, bones, their locations and many many more. And med ppl actually came up with many mnemonics to remember their functions and names and stuff like that.
These are actually kept under the carpet, away frm the public who thinks we are damn nerdy and stuff lah, but well, sex is always the universal 'interest' and I must admit, they actually make things much easier to remember.
To quote a few:
We have brachial nerves. Ok, sounds damn chim. Basically, it's the set of nerves which goes to the upper limb (shoulder, elbow, hand, etc). Trying to make things sound not as chim as they seem to be here. As we know, nerves comes out of the spinal cord and this part sounds more complicated. Bascially, some nerves will join up here and there and eventually spilt up again.
As I was talking about the brachial nerves, they eventually ends up as 5 main branches namely, Musculocutaneous nerve, Axilary nerve, Radial nerve, Median nerve and Ulnar nerve.
Don't bother about the actual names lah. Anyway, to remember these, ppl came up with:
Musculocutaneous nerve: My
Axilary nerve: Aunt
Radial nerve: Rapes
Median nerve: My
Ulnar nerve: Uncle
That's not all. Another example would be the names of the carpal bones in our hands. Our hands are actualy made up of numerous small bones, on top of the obvious ones you see like the fingers are made up of 3 small bones each (except for the thumb). Anyway, there is this part which is made up of 8 small carpal bones in the hand. To remember it, ppl came up with:
Scaphoid: Some
Lunate: Lovers
Triquetrum: Try
Pisiform:Positions
Trapezium: That
Trapezoid: They
Capitate: Can't
Hamate: Handle
Apparently, this mnemonics existed even before I'm borne! Wow! Doctors have been so cheeky ever since ancient times! And we had always tot ancient ppl are more conservative?! Ermm... maybe not. Otherwise how did the ancient Indians come up with the Kamasutra? Hmm... I'm the most innocent one lah... :)
If you think: Chey, not that 'explosive' mah... Wait till you get to the end of this entry.
Another example, we have 12 main cranial nerves. The details are not important here. Anyway, we have to learn the 12 names and their functions. Some of their functions are motor, some sensory and some ve both functions. Motor meaning they control movement, sensory senses stuff and both means both lah!
To remember their general functions (Motor, Sensory or both), ppl came up with this:
CN I - Sensory: Some
CN II - Sensory: Say
CN II - Motor: Mary
CN II - Motor: Money
CN II - Both: But
CN II - Motor: My
CN II - Both: Brother
CN II - Sensory: Says
CN II - Both: Big
CN II - Both: Boobs
CN II - Motor: Mean
CN II - Motor: More
The most 'explosive' one will involve remembering the names of these nerves:
Olfactory Nerve: Oh
Optic Nerve: Oh
Oculomotor Nerve: Oh
Trochlear Nerve: To
Trigeminal Nerve: Touch
Abducens Nerve: And
Facial Nerve: Feel
Vestibulo-Cochlear Nerve: Virgin
Glossopharyngeal Nerve: Gals
Vagus Nerve: Vagina
Accessory Nerve: And
Hypoglossal Nerve: Hymen
This is damn explosive lah! Din know this mnemonics until one of the tutor said it and was posted on our web by a student lah! Well, at least now I remember these names and function liaoz... See, med students arent that nerdy as ppl thought lah... :)
